In A Cave

Context

TL;DR: Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

Content

Imagine this.

From birth, you have sat in a cave.

In this cave, you are confined such that you are forced to look at the same wall your whole life.

On this wall exist projections, shadows of objects being cast from the light of a fire behind you.

These shadows are your only real understanding of what really exists behind you.

A shadow of a book is called a book, but it's not really a book.

Only when one frees themselves from what binds their perspective do they see things for what they truly are.

Now imagine this.

The wall is a television, computer, or cell phone. All of them.

What used to be wall projections, shadows of reality, are now high definition images.

Figures, facts, data. Amazing bodies, grotesque images, inflammatory news.

How could they not be real?

Most of the time in your day has a screen in front of you more than it does not.

Oh wait, why does this sound more relatable?

If only Plato could have witnessed the 21st century.

He'd see more cave dwellers than land walkers than ever.

And it would be plain as day.

Only when one frees themselves from what binds their perspective do they see things for what they truly are.
